Adiosss…Cleopatra..hello Blanche..

After finish study Antony Cleopatra, I am so relieved to learn a new and a good play. A street car named desire is one of the best playwrights that I had learn throughout my course here in UPM. It was written by Tennessee Williams. What I like about this playwright is actually, the language and the portrayal of the character Blanche. Obviously, the language use is much more easier than Shakespeare and I could understand easily by reading it on my own. Not like Antony and Cleopatra, where I really need Dr Edwin help in class to make sure that I understand the play.
As for the character Blanche, it is the most important character in this play. And what I like about Blanche is that her character is very unique and also very complex. From our discussion in class with Dr Edwin, there are two ways in which we can examine character traits which are through action and speech. What I like about Blanche is that she is a type of character who is cannot accept the reality. She has the inability to accept changes in life that makes her become a pretender, liar and others.
Due to this also, she is having a lot of conflict with other people in this play. But, what really interested about Blanche character is that even though she is a well-educated people, she did not behave like one. For example, she lies to people, she's lying about the truth, and she’s hot tempered and others. Yes, she behaves like a lady even though and still retains her own values in a new setting, but to me, it does not correlate with her personal traits like liar, pretender and etc.
In a conclusion, I would like to say that I really like this play especially by the way the author portray the character Blanche. The play is so much interesting that makes me want to read the play over and over again.

Hye Sheila! It is true what you have said about how relieved you are to learn a new play after several strong and hard efforts being put during the learning of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra. In fact, I do feel anxious upon learning the famous masterpiece of Shakespeare. For your information, based on what I have read in a book entitled “Shakespeare: The Basic”, the language of the famous writer is the most difficult to be learned, so I think that how great it is for us to learn an authentic language of Shakespeare. I share the same point of view with you in which you like Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire because of the portrayal of Blanche as the protagonist. Blanche is a fallen woman in the eyes of society and that is why I think that she has rather complex personality and just like what you have stated that she kind of cannot accept the reality of life. She becomes a pretender, liar mainly because she wants to be listened to, loved and pampered just like what Stella gets from her husband, Stanley. I believe that you have gathered some information and have a clear cut of the story or the play by watching Elia Kazan’s A Streetcar Named Desire starred Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. Notice that the actress plays Blanche, she looks innocent and sweet yet she displays her jealousy upon looking at her sister and her husband. The movie does help a lot right? Last but not least, take Blanche positively because somehow the personalities she adopts are from what she has gone through in her life of haunting memories.
